2012 Bridging the Divide -‐ 100 km Run for Change
Take part in the adventure of a lifetime – not one but two urban 50K runs three days apart in Peru! Health Bridges International (HBI), sponsored by Run Amok Tours, is recruiting for the Second Annual Bridging the Divide – 100km Run for Change. Please join us for one of the most challenging urban ultra events in the world. The event provides not only two physically challenging courses running through one of the world’s most coveted tourist destinations, but also the social challenge of bridging together some of the poorest and wealthiest communities in Latin America. Bridging the Divide aims to shine a light on the ever-‐growing economic disparities of developing – AND, provide the adventure of a lifetime. The two 50 km courses are full of adventure and technically challenging urban-‐ultras anywhere. We will run along the Pan-‐American Highway under police escort. We will run through some of the poorest developing communities in Lima and Arequipa, Perú. We will run on the steep hills of the Andes Mountains under the shadow of 19,000-‐foot peaks. And, we will run through historic World Heritage Sites in downtown Lima. The added altruistic (or “ultruistic”) benefit is how our team will bridge together rich and poor communities, unifying each with a common goal for at least one day. We know that together change is possible.
The Courses: Course one in Lima: we will run from the high sand hills of the community of San Juan de Miraflores to the beautiful ancient colonial city center of Rimac. This first 50 km will be run at sea level, through the 14th largest city in the world, with nearly 5,000 feet of elevation change. Course two in Arequipa: (after 2 days of rest) will begin at 9,200 feet of elevation and will traverse across hills created by two local volcanoes Misti and Chachani, through the beautiful communities of La Ciudad Blanca, the White City, and ending on the steps of the famous White Cathedral in one of the most beautiful city centers of South America. Total elevation change will be nearly 6,500 feet in 50-‐kilometers.
Why Bridging the Divide?: Apart from the fact that these two ultras are incredibly unique; there is an underlying purpose of social awareness and action. The economic divide between the rich and poor across the world continues to expand, and in Perú, where HBI focuses its’ efforts, that divide is never more apparent. Beginning in some of the poorest communities and ending in some of the richest, we will continue to show how close these communities really are. As a participant in the Bridging the Divide -‐ 100 km Run for Change, you will help to unite communities and volunteers and help shine a light on these disparities.
Event Details
Preparations: This is the event of a lifetime; and, a very challenging physical endeavor. To aid in your preparations for the runs, Run Amok Tours will be providing coaching and pre-‐event training support. Run Amok Tours (info@runamoktours.com) provides comprehensive, unique and fun marathon travel opportunities around the world. This will include weekly schedules and, for those in the Portland area, training runs.
It is important to remember that the runs will take place during the Latin American summer months. Participants should plan for hot weather in Lima and warm weather at very high altitude (9,000 feet above sea level) in Arequipa. HBI will take care of all of the supplies -‐ from a sag vehicle, to food and clean water, to hotel accommodations. Participants need to be prepared to run two 50-‐kilometer "races" in three days. This is not going to be an easy event. And, it will be the adventure of a lifetime . . . guaranteed!
Dates: The tentative dates for the runs are December 04 and December 07, 2012. Runners who decide to join us, will need to be in Lima, Peru no later than Sunday, December 02. Every major carrier (LAN, Continental, Delta, American) and a few lesser airlines (Taca, Spirit Airlines, Copa Airlines, have flights from the U.S. (Miami, Los Angeles, New York, Houston, San Francisco, and Atlanta) into Lima.

The runs are physical demanding and include extensive international travel. Participants should be able to complete a marathon in under 4-‐hours and/or have experience with 5+ hour endurance events.
